Monte Lussari sits in the Julian Alps like a balcony above the Canal Valley, and precisely up there, a pilgrimage church was built, as if the path for pilgrims was never too steep. Because it is also a ski mountain, devotion and lift operation have always belonged together here, without one pushing itself into the foreground. All around, the mountain ranges stack in rows, ridge behind ridge, each a bit paler and more distant than the one before, until the border between rock and sky is barely discernible. Tarvis lies down in the valley floor, and the Sentiero Riofreddo-Lussari reminds us that this summit was reached on foot long before the gondolas.
