Riquewihr, a wine village in Alsace, nestles against the hills of the Vosges. Its fortifications characterize the town center, with the Porte Haute, a massive gate tower of stone and half-timbering, marking the western access to the historic alley. This narrow passage winds through densely built rows of houses, which press their colorful facades and pointed roofs closely together.
The strong colors of the half-timbered buildings, often kept in red, ochre, or green, stand out from the dark structure of the wooden half-timbering. In between, small windows open, often hung with flower boxes, which scatter additional color accents. The cobblestone ground guides the eye through the alley, which opens to the east, revealing a view of further gables and roofs.
