Riva del Garda is located at the northern end of Lake Garda, where the Sarca flows into the lake. The town nestles against steeply rising rock faces, which narrow the lake basin here more than in the south. The terrain slopes directly from the urban area into the water, creating only narrow shorelines.
Two elements characterize the landscape here: the vastness of the lake, which opens to the south, and the rocky foothills of the Garda Mountains, which enclose the town to the west and east. This topography creates a natural backdrop that always directs the gaze to the water and the opposite shores. The development on the shore is dense, which greatly condenses the space between mountains and lake.
The lakeside promenade is a central access point to the lake. It allows views over the water and to the surrounding peaks that rise from the lake surface. The character of the place is a mixture of urban space and alpine lake landscape.
