The Fanal Forest on Madeira is known for its ancient, gnarled Stink Laurel trees, which are often shrouded in fog. These trees, shaped by wind and weather, create a unique, almost mystical landscape that stands out from other forests on Madeira. The specific density and distribution of the trees at this location offer countless opportunities for compositions.

Early morning is particularly appealing here, as the low-lying sun casts long shadows and emphasizes the contours of the trees. Even on foggy days, the forest unfolds a special character when the trees emerge dimly from the haze. At these times, the forest is usually still deserted, which allows for undisturbed photography.

For image compositions, the striking silhouettes of the trees against the sky are ideal, especially when the sun breaks through the branches and creates rays of light. The curved trunks and branches can serve as natural leading lines to guide the viewer's gaze through the image. Also, experiment with ground proximity to highlight the roots and moss-covered undergrowth.
