The Hintersteiner Lake lies embedded in the northern Limestone Alps, east of Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser. It is a karst lake, characterized by its clear, green-blue coloration, fed by underground springs. Its shores are lined by steeply rising, forested slopes, which give the lake a secluded basin location.

The play with depth here arises from the staggering of the forested hills and the barren peaks of the Wilden Kaiser rising behind them. One must read the lake's horizon line as a calm, horizontal element that grounds the vertical structures of the mountains. The shoreline breaks the monotony of the forest areas and guides the eye across the water surface into the distance.
