Hintersee is nestled in the Berchtesgaden Alps, a glacial trough lake, surrounded by dense coniferous forests and steeply rising peaks. Its shoreline is characterized by striking boulders and small islands that protrude from the clear water. In the background, the rugged flanks of the Hochkalter massif and the Reiter Alpe rise.

The lake's water shimmers in intense green and turquoise tones, an effect of the mineral-rich meltwaters that cascade down from the surrounding mountains. Below the surface, the contours of submerged rocks and tree trunks, which structure the lakebed, are visible.
