Achensee, a fjord-like barrier reservoir in Tyrol, nestles tightly between the steeply rising mountain flanks of the Karwendel Mountains in the west and the Rofan Mountains in the east. It forms a deep furrow in the landscape and stretches over nine kilometers in a north-south direction. Its shores often drop abruptly, with the surrounding forests moving close to the water.
The mountains rise abruptly from the lake, creating a backdrop that catches or breaks the light in their deep crevices. The lake surface reflects the massive flanks, thus doubling the dimension of the landscape. Achensee acts like a long, dark mirror that absorbs the mountains and enhances their presence.
