Narrowly framed and yet wide: The Regnitz here flows as a broad, calm ribbon through Bamberg, and the houses move so close to the bank that the river almost looks like a street. From the lower bridge, the river axis opens into a long vista, in which facades and roofs are staggered to the horizon. The water here is not a backdrop, but the center around which the entire city aligns.

On the bank, narrow half-timbered houses with red tiled roofs crowd close together, like fishermen's houses holding each other's shoulders. Opposite, larger, smoothly plastered buildings set a calmer tone, with riverside greenery pushing up against the walls in between. Further downstream, another bridge crosses the water before the Regnitz makes its way towards the Main, into which it eventually flows.
