Riva del Garda is located at the northern end of Lake Garda, wedged between the steep flanks of Monte Rocchetta to the west and the foothills of Monte Baldo to the east. Piazza Catena forms a central point of the lakeside promenade, from which the view opens up over the wide expanse of water to the south. The backdrop is dominated by the high mountains of Trentino, which rise directly on the lakeshore.

The place is highly frequented by tourists, especially in the summer months. The shore areas and the Piazza itself are rarely deserted, which makes the search for quiet motifs difficult. The presence of ferries and excursion boats characterizes the image of the harbor; they often lie tightly packed at the quay.

The view over the lake is highly dependent on the weather conditions and the time of day. Especially in the morning, the direct view into the sun can pose a great challenge and significantly reduce contrasts. The high mountains quickly swallow the light, which can lead to harsh shadows.
