Monte Lussari is a high-altitude settlement in the Julian Alps on the border with Slovenia. The small mountain village nestles against a steep slope and is dominated by a striking pilgrimage church. To the west, the forested slopes drop steeply into the valley, while to the east, rugged rock formations rise up.
The place is only accessible via a narrow mountain road or a cable car, which characterizes its seclusion. The houses are grouped closely around the church, often terraced on several levels to follow the terrain. This construction creates a dense, vertical structure that stands out against the wide horizon of the surrounding mountains.
The topography of Monte Lussari offers a natural staggering: The church forms the highest point, followed by the houses and paths below, which wind spirally up the slope. The sharp edges of the rock massifs in the background form a stark contrast to the softer lines of the settlement and the forested slopes.
