Helnæs Lighthouse sits on the crest of the peninsula like a white pencil someone has stuck between field and sea. Behind it, the land slopes down to the coast, and the Baltic Sea begins so abruptly that the tower seems more a boundary marker than a building. A small farm with red roofs and a copse huddle at its foot, as if seeking wind protection.

All around lies wide, flat agricultural land of the municipality of Assens, field after field, only traversed by the bright band of a narrow road. Precisely because nothing else strives upwards, the lighthouse gains its significance: it is the only vertical line in a landscape that otherwise consists entirely of horizontals.
