The Gothic Gate is located in the heart of the Adersbach-Teplitz Rock Town in Czechia, a bizarre sandstone formation. It marks the entrance to one of the narrowest and highest gorge sections, where the rock walls rise vertically several tens of meters.

The composition of the gate plays with the narrowness of the gorge; the arch shape frames the dark passage and emphasizes the vertical alignment of the rock walls. The horizontal layers of the sandstone form a strong contrast to the human architecture. To enhance the depth effect, one should direct the gaze into the maw of the gate.

The gate itself does not stand in isolation but is integrated into the rock wall. The lateral rock formations guide the gaze upwards and emphasize the claustrophobic effect of the narrow passage. Anyone who places the gate too dominantly in the picture loses the visual connection to the surrounding rocks.
